Printer Not Printing? 10 Quick Fixes for HP Printers
Share
You press Print, and nothing happens. Or the printer says "Offline", the job sits stuck in the queue, or pages come out blank. It's frustrating, but most printing problems have simple causes, and you can fix many of them in a few minutes without calling anyone.
This guide walks through 10 quick fixes for HP printers on Windows, starting with the easiest. Work through them in order and stop when your printer works again.
The 60-second checklist
Before anything else, check these:
- Is the printer switched on and is the power cable firmly plugged in?
- Is there an error message or flashing light on the printer?
- Is there paper in the tray, loaded correctly?
- Is the USB cable plugged in, or is the printer on the same Wi-Fi as your computer?
- Did you select the right printer when you pressed Print?
If all of these look fine, go to Fix 1.
Fix 1: Restart the printer, computer and router
This simple step clears many temporary faults.
- Turn off the printer.
- Restart your computer.
- If you use Wi-Fi, switch off your router for about 30 seconds, then switch it back on.
- Turn the printer back on last and wait until it is ready.
Then try printing again.
Fix 2: Clear a paper jam safely
A jammed sheet can stop printing completely, even if you can't see it.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it. On a laser printer, let it cool for a few minutes, because parts inside can be hot.
- Open the paper tray and the rear or top doors.
- Gently pull the paper out in the direction it normally travels. Don't yank it, and don't use sharp objects.
- Check for small torn pieces left behind.
- Close everything, plug the printer in and turn it on.
If the jam keeps coming back, try fresh, dry, flat paper and don't overfill the tray.
Fix 3: Make sure the printer isn't offline or paused
Windows can get stuck in "offline" mode, even when the printer is fine.
- Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your HP printer and choose See what's printing.
- Click the Printer menu at the top.
- Make sure Use Printer Offline and Pause Printing are not ticked. If they are, click them to remove the tick.
Fix 4: Set your HP printer as the default
If Windows sends your print job to another printer, yours will never start.
- Windows 11: go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Windows 10: go to Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners.
Turn off "Let Windows manage my default printer", click your HP printer, and choose Set as default. If your printer appears twice, choose the one that is not greyed out.
Fix 5: Clear the print queue
One stuck document can block every job behind it.
- Open the printer queue (See what's printing, as in Fix 3).
- Click Printer → Cancel All Documents.
- Confirm, wait a few seconds, then print a single small test page.
Fix 6: Check the connection
For USB: try a different USB port and a different cable, and plug directly into the computer, not a hub.
For Wi-Fi:
- Check that the printer and your computer are on the same network.
- Look at the printer's wireless light or screen to see if it is connected.
- Restart your router if other devices have trouble too.
- If your printer has a Wi-Fi or network menu, reconnect it to your network.
If your printer stays offline on Wi-Fi, try connecting it with a USB cable to check that the printer itself works.
Fix 7: Run HP's automatic repair tool
HP has a built-in tool that detects and fixes many connection and offline problems.
- Open the HP Smart app on your computer, or go to HP's Diagnose & Fix page.
- Choose your printer and run Diagnose & Fix.
- Follow the on-screen steps.
You can also run the Windows printer troubleshooter under Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Printer.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall the printer driver
A missing, old or corrupted driver is a common cause.
- Remove the printer: go to Printers & scanners, select your HP printer and choose Remove.
- Restart your computer.
- Add the printer again using the HP Smart app, or download the latest driver for your exact model from HP's support site.
Make sure you choose your exact printer model when you download.
Fix 9: Restart the print spooler
The print spooler is a Windows service that manages print jobs. Restarting it often fixes stubborn queue problems.
- Press Windows + R, type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Print Spooler in the list.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
If jobs still won't clear, stop the spooler, delete the files inside the folder C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS (not the folder itself), and start the spooler again. Only do this if you are comfortable with Windows.
Fix 10: Check your toner or ink
If the printer runs but the pages come out wrong, the problem is usually supplies, not the computer.
Blank pages
- Check that all protective tape and seals are removed from new cartridges.
- Make sure each cartridge is clicked firmly into place.
- Check toner or ink levels in the HP Smart app or on the printer screen.
Faded or streaky prints (laser printers)
- Remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it side to side to spread the toner, then put it back.
- If the problem continues, the cartridge may be nearly empty. Check our guide to choosing the right HP toner cartridge.
Faded, streaky or missing colours (inkjet and ink tank printers)
- Open the HP Smart app, select your printer, and run Clean Printhead from the print quality tools.
- Print a print quality diagnostic page to see which colour is affected.
- If you haven't used the printer for a while, ink can dry out. Print a colour page now and then to keep it clear.
Ink tank printers also need the right refills. See our ink bottles and cartridges and toner cartridges.
Still not printing? Know when to stop
Get professional help if:
- The printer shows a hardware error that doesn't clear after a restart.
- Genuine new cartridges still don't print and cleaning doesn't help.
- The printer fails its self-test or diagnostic page.
- You hear grinding noises or see smoke or a burning smell. Switch it off and unplug it at once.
If your printer is under warranty, contact HP support or an authorised service centre rather than opening the printer yourself, because that can affect your warranty. Keep your invoice handy.
If the printer is old, repairs may cost more than a replacement. See our guide to the best HP printers in India 2026, or compare laser vs inkjet vs ink tank printers if you're changing type.
Tips to prevent printer problems
- Keep your drivers and HP Smart app updated.
- Use genuine HP toner and ink to avoid compatibility and quality issues.
- Print something regularly, especially on inkjet and ink tank printers.
- Use good-quality, dry paper and don't overfill the tray.
- Keep the printer in a clean, dry spot away from dust and heat.
- Turn it off properly using the power button.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my HP printer say offline when it's on?
Usually Windows is set to "Use Printer Offline", the wrong default printer is selected, or the printer lost its Wi-Fi connection. Fixes 3, 4 and 6 solve most cases.
How do I clear a stuck print job?
Open the printer queue, choose Printer, then Cancel All Documents. If jobs remain, restart the print spooler (Fix 9).
Why is my printer printing blank pages?
Common causes are leftover protective tape on a new cartridge, an empty or badly seated cartridge, or a clogged printhead on inkjet printers.
Do these steps work on a Mac?
The ideas are similar, but the menus are different. On a Mac, remove and re-add the printer in System Settings and use the HP Smart app.
Should I use non-HP cartridges?
Quality and compatibility vary, and some printers reject cartridges with non-HP chips. Genuine cartridges are the safest choice. WERY sells 100% genuine products with official brand warranty.
