New Toner Cartridge Not Detected? How to Fix Common HP LaserJet Toner Errors
Share
You've just installed a fresh toner cartridge, and your HP LaserJet says "cartridge missing", "not detected" or "very low". It's frustrating, but in many cases the fix takes a couple of minutes and the cartridge is fine.
This guide walks through the common causes in order, explains what the messages mean, and tells you when it's time to return the cartridge.
The short answer
- Check it's the right cartridge for your exact printer model.
- Remove and reinstall it firmly. It should click into place.
- Make sure all tape, seals and packaging are removed.
- Check the contacts for dust or fingerprints.
- Restart the printer.
- Still stuck? Contact the seller or HP support, keeping your invoice.
First, check you have the right cartridge
Toner cartridges look alike but are not interchangeable. Check the number on your old cartridge, the printer's label, or its manual, and match it to the cartridge you bought. For example:
| Printer | Toner |
|---|---|
| HP Laser 1008a | HP 166A black |
| HP LaserJet Pro MFP M126nw | HP 88A black |
| HP Color LaserJet Pro 4203dw | HP 230A or 230X (black, cyan, magenta, yellow) |
Our guide to choosing the right HP toner cartridge explains how to read the numbers. A cartridge for the wrong model can fit loosely or not be recognised at all.
How to install a toner cartridge correctly
- Switch off the printer and open the toner door. Let the inside cool if it's been printing.
- Take the new cartridge out of its bag and place it on a clean surface.
- Gently rock it from side to side a few times to spread the toner.
- Remove all the packaging, including the protective strip, tape and any seal, as shown in the instructions inside the box.
- Don't touch the green or shiny drum or the rollers, because fingerprints can mark your prints.
- Slide the cartridge in along the guides until it clicks into place.
- Close the door and switch the printer on.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall firmly
A cartridge that isn't fully seated is the most common cause. Take it out, check that nothing is blocking the slot, and push it in again until it clicks. Close the door fully, since many printers won't work if the door isn't properly shut.
Fix 2: Check for packaging and seals
A leftover strip or seal can stop the printer from reading the cartridge or letting toner flow. Take the cartridge out and check carefully for orange strips, tape or plastic covers. Remove anything the instructions tell you to take off.
Fix 3: Check the contacts
Cartridges and printers use small electrical contacts to talk to each other. Dust or fingerprints can break the connection.
- Look at the contacts on the cartridge and the matching ones inside the printer.
- Wipe them gently with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Don't use liquids.
- Don't touch the drum or other parts of the cartridge, and don't force anything.
- If a contact looks bent or damaged, stop and contact the seller.
Fix 4: Restart the printer
- Switch the printer off and unplug it.
- Wait about a minute.
- Plug it back in, switch it on, and let it fully start up before opening the door or printing.
Fix 5: Update the printer, carefully
A software update can fix recognition problems, so check for firmware updates from the HP Smart app or HP's support site for your exact model. However, in rare cases an update has caused cartridges to be rejected on certain models, even genuine ones. If the error began right after an update, contact HP support online.
Fix 6: Check "very low" settings
A "very low" message on a new cartridge can be confusing. Some HP LaserJets have a supply setting that controls what the printer does when a cartridge is very low, for example whether it stops or keeps printing. Check your printer's menu or manual. If the message appears on a brand new cartridge, check that it's the right model and fully seated before assuming it's faulty.
What the messages usually mean
| Message | Common causes |
|---|---|
| Cartridge missing or not detected | Not seated, packaging left on, dirty or damaged contacts, wrong cartridge |
| Very low or low | Estimate based on page count, a setting, or a partly used or incompatible cartridge |
| Non-HP, used or unauthorised cartridge | The printer doesn't recognise the cartridge's chip, possibly because it's not genuine HP or is refilled |
| Cartridge error | A faulty cartridge, or damage in transit |
Error codes and wording vary by model. Check your manual for the exact meaning of your message.
Faded or streaky prints after a new cartridge
- Rock the cartridge gently and put it back.
- Check for tape or seals again.
- Check your paper. Damp, thin or unsuitable paper affects print quality. Our photocopy paper guide explains what to use.
- Check the print density or toner-saving mode, because economy mode prints lighter.
- Print a test page.
If a clear line or streak appears on every page, the cartridge may be faulty or damaged. Note down what you see and contact the seller.
When to stop and ask for help
Contact the seller or HP support if:
- The packaging was damaged or toner has spilled in the bag
- It's the wrong model for your printer
- The error continues after the fixes above
- The printer displays a hardware error that doesn't clear after a restart
- You see smoke, a burning smell or hear grinding. Switch off and unplug at once.
Keep your invoice and the box, and take clear photos of the cartridge and the error message. They make a return or replacement much easier. Check the seller's return policy for the timeframe.
If your printer rejects the cartridge because it doesn't recognise it, don't try to work around the printer's protection. Return the cartridge or ask for a compatible genuine one. WERY sells 100% genuine products with official brand warranty.
Handle toner safely
- Toner is a fine powder. Don't breathe it in or blow on it.
- If it spills, wipe it up with a damp cloth. Don't use a normal household vacuum cleaner.
- If it gets on skin or clothes, use cold water. Hot water can set the toner.
- Keep cartridges away from children.
How to store toner
- Keep cartridges in their sealed bag until you use them.
- Store upright or flat as the box shows, in a cool, dry place.
- Keep them away from heat and direct sunlight.
